Hey There! I’ve had a couple of people ask about adding widgets the sidebar in WordPress so here goes! (If you need really detailed information on Widgets you should go here: http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Widgets).
Widgets and Plugins are a great way to add some functionality to your blog without having to actually edit your WordPress Theme. There are also a an absolute tonne of plugins out there, in fact this is one of the things that makes WordPress such a great platform to build your site with!
So with no further ado, get in there and start adding your widgets to the sidebar!
Step 1: Log in to WordPress, go down to “Appearance” and click on “Widgets”.
Step 2: On the right hand side of the screen, choose the sidebar that you want to add the widget to, and click on the arrow to the right.

Step 3: Click on the widget that you’d like to add to the sidebar, and drag it into the sidebar box. If you have other widgets in there, you can choose where in the sidebar you’d like it to go.

Step 4: If you’d like to have a look at what’s going on in the widget, just click on the arrow to the right hand side and it’ll open up and you can make whatever changes you need to.

And it’s that simple! If you’d like to have a look at some recommended widgets that I use on my websites (a lot of them come as a result of plugins) then just go to http://johndetlefs.com/my-favorite-wordpress-plugins-for-2011/ and check em out! (some of these plugins will have affiliate links).
Hope you enjoyed the tutorial, and have fun!
Cheers,
John Detlefs
